Situated on a picturesque historic square in Hackney this listed house had beautiful original proportions and details, but the lower ground floor was dark and underwhelming and completely failed to connect with the large garden to the rear.
We removed an existing, badly insulated extension and created an extension that reads as a transition between the historic house and the garden. Separated from the rear facade by a glazed link, the extension is a light and simple timber, and black zinc structure that provides shelter and warmth whilst ensuring views of the beautiful garden from all areas of the lower ground floor.
The interior uses a simple palette of lime plaster, concrete floors and Douglas fir timber, alongside natural fabrics, to create a calming atmosphere, which is simultaneously cosy whilst also feeling completely connected to the garden and the square beyond.
